The Douglas MGR-1A Honest John was the earliest of the US tactical battlefield nuclear weapons.

It received its first test firing in 1951 at the White Sands testing range and entered service two years later.  Both the MGR-1A and the improved MGR-1B (introduced in 1960) were unguided rockets used in a similar manner to conventional tube artillery. Example one type of military vehicles

Range was up to 19km (12miles).  Besides 2-, 20-, or 40-kiloton W31 nuclear warheads, conventional warheads could be fitted, including 680kg (1500lb) HE and 564 (1243lb) chemical.

The Honest John was launched from the chassis of a 6×6 truck TEL vehicle.  Being an unguided missile, it was fired from a simple hydraulically raised rail.
